Can you still buy metal water tanks for the central heating system, i can only find the plastic ones?

Plastic is best. Metal obviously rusts away and the filth will get into all your radiators and pipework. I pulled one out last week, i’m afraid its down the dump by now. If you know any plumbers/heating engineers, ask one to keep an eye out and one will pop up in time. Better still, use plastic.

you can get copper tanks for the hot water. Cold is usually plastic.

If you are unable to find any such online you may like to try the local plummers in your phone book. I’ve got a world war 2 tank stuck in my loft. Got alone knows how they managed to get it in. I guess remove tiles from roof. It was replace in the 60s with a modern plastic tank. Good luck with your search.

I’ve not seen a metal, galvanised header tank for a long time, but why would you want one they only go rusty! Fit a plastic one, it will last for ever.

Not sure you can buy one specifically for a header tank.
however, you could try farmers shops ( not FARM shops )
There are lots of galvanised feeder tanks of all sizes, including those approximating to header tanks.
They also come with the hole for the ballcock, often already fitted, you’d have to drill the outlet hole near the base though.
Being for farmers and outdoors, they are very strong and much thicker than a domestic water tank.
If you are in the UK, try Wynnstay or somewhere like that.
